The salt gradient in the freshwater-seawater boundaries is an opportunity to generate electricity. And it may cover 40% of global electricity generation.
By capacitive mixing process, we can make an open-system battery and produce electricity by salinity gradient. Now it can produce electricity as 0. 4 W/m2, twice the power density as the traditional method.
However, many scientists are sceptical cause it relies on an extreme salt gradient, which makes it practicable only in geothermal well, evaporation ponds, etc. Once this problem is solved, it can be considered as the third largest renewable energy, following after solar power and wind power.
