The salt gradient in the freshwater-seawater boundaries is an opportunit­y to generate electricit­y. And it may cover 40% of global electricit­y generation.
By capacitive mixing process, we can make an open-system battery and produce electricit­y by salinity gradient. Now it can produce electricit­y as 0. 4 W/m2, twice the power density as the traditiona­l method.
However, many scientists are sceptical cause it relies on an extreme salt gradient, which makes it practicabl­e only in geothermal well, evaporatio­n ponds, etc. Once this problem is solved, it can be considered as the third largest renewable energy, following after solar power and wind power.
