There are many reasons that people would argue as the cause of young people not being so keen on science and studying it. From my point of view the two key factors about it are the poor management of science teaching on early education, and the economic viability on scientific careers that might require too much effort for not so high earnings.
On the one hand, most of us have probably experienced the way science is taught at school. Not only is it basically all theoretical and dense, but also it is not frequently related to student’s interests. Therefore, most of pupils take it as a burden they just must endure, and do not get attracted by it. If only teachers could make its teaching more practical and find a way to mix with some topics that are closer to learner’s curiosity then it would probably work better.
On the other hand, there is the fact that the economy does not benefit pure scientifics careers such as mathematician or physicist, as much as perhaps doctors, professional athletes or having a business. Moreover, pure science studies are extremely demanding, thereby not receiving a large income or at least a safe and stable job will surely make people discard these careers. If the government guaranteed any of these, then an increasing number of people would start considering these. And it is undeniable that science is one of the most essential engines of a country’s productivity.
To conclude, although both aspect are crucial, I am inclined to believe that the schooling one is the most decisive, since from my experience it is normal to go after what really fulfil your expectatives and getting the population into science at early ages can make the difference.
