The notion “spaces and exchanges” deals with the different spaces of the world which are nowadays more and more connected to each other. The immigration is linked to this notion as it implies the motion of legal and illegal people to other countries and more specifically the United States which is an attracting country and a “Land of Liberty” and the American Dream embodies this.
First of all, we watched a video to define what’s the American Dream. The video is a collection of 7 testimonies of 7 people with different ages and origins who live in the US. They all have an idealized vision of the American Dream, for them the US are the best country in the world where you can pursue your dream and everybody have the same chances. The video is very chauvinistic and a propaganda for the American Dream and try to keep its alive because the US has problems like social divide between rich and poor or racial discrimination and also some gun’s problem with mass shooting.
But the US still attracting for many immigrants and the American Dream is an opportunity for them but also for the US.
The second document we studied is the cover of the economical magazine Business Week published in 2005. The cover is a photomontage of one same immigrant which at the right is an immigrant with a bundle, crossing the border towards the US and at the left is a man who has make purchases walking in a typical US housing estate. The photomontage has the title “Embracing illegals” and with a subtitle to explain 11 million immigrants can be a boon for the US economy. I think the US needs the buying power of these undocumented immigrants. And this cover draws the US politicians to the immigrants’ power and they can be assets for the country.
But the immigrants haven’t the same rights as a US citizen and some of these restrictions can be a handicap to make the American Dream.
Finally, we studied a speech from Barack Obama in 2011 about the DREAM act. The DREAM act is a bill which was introduced in Congress since 2001. The aim is to legalize the status of undocumented students and allow them to go to college or serve in the military. Because, without the DREAM act the immigrants can’t go to college because it’s illegal or they can’t afford to pay the tuition fees. Barack Obama explain why it’s absurd because immigrants come to the US to make the American Dream, to study but they can’t go to college and the talented immigrants risk deportation in a country they don’t want. Unfortunately for them, the law is never passed and the United States lost a bit of its attractivity.
In conclusion by its story, the United States was a “Land of Liberty” and the American Dream attracts immigrants regardless of their origin or their wealth and give them hope and the possibility to succeed. But the American Dream is reducing, giving the possibility to succeed to the richest with the current laws. The United States wants the richest immigrants but it’s against the philosophy of the American Dream, which is a dream for all.
