No enigma resists a long time to Sherlock Holmes. This private detective endowed with an infallible memory is recognised for resolve the most complex criminals cases. Always escorted by his associate, Doctor John Watson, the famous Londoner inhabitant of two hundred twenty-one b Baker Street made his appearance in eighteen eighty-seven in the crime novel A Study in Pink written by the british author Arthur Conan Doyle. A first adventure who will be finally only the beginning of a long line.
Why after more than one century, is Arthur Conan Doyle’s character continues to fascinate ?
About the character, what appeals to readers, it’s his genius : in some seconds, he can produce the portrait of an anonymous : temperament, job, habits, travels, past and many over details come to him at first glance. Clothes said to him a lot about this person that a questionning of several hours. Pretty often, the detective works at the same time with the police as it failed to solve several crimes where he is brought to investigate. In this way, which allows to compare Sherlock to a superman is his large intelligence who surpasses the one of the police and of the ordinary mortal. In fact, he is especially interested by chemistry and medicine, but he has many knowledges concerning dactyloscopy, microbiology, calligraphy, etcetera. His powers are those of mind and deduction but also he has a great capacity to dress up to get what he wants and he transmits an image of justicer. However, he is first a detective, that is a justicer of true but who only desires to discover the culprit’s identity and no to make him condemn.
Far away to look like at epoch’s heroes, this character distant, full of himself, mysogynist and drug addict, tempts yet reader’s liking. Overstepped by the popularity of his character and somewhat jealous of his success, his creator even tries to make him disappear in The Final Problem, before to be forced, under pressure from readers, to revive him in The Hound of The Baskerville. In all, four novels and fifty-six novellas have made to Sherlock Holmes a real star.
Apart from this, the author’s death in nineteen thirty doesn’t prevent the next of the Sherlock Holmes’s adventures, it isn’t a reason enough to see the character fade in memory. Object of many studies, called « holmesian studies », Sherlock is also behind the Holmesian societies. In nineteen thirty-four, fans of the legendary detective feel the need to meet them to talk about the life of their favorite character. Gradually, societies increase in USA, Great Britain, France and even in Japan. There ARE today, nearly five hundred associations in the world. It’s a character pretty often studied in schools and it’s also the character the most adapted to the screen. More than two hundred sixty movies have been produced, not forgetting TV series, playes, radio saga and cartoons who are inspired of the enigmatic Holmes. In his own way, he is also a pioneer of superheroes who will fill later the comic-books. But which is the most original, it’s the belief of a good part of the public to the reality of the character because many of them have believed and still believe that Sherlock Holmes has existed. Every day letters at his name arrive again at the two hundred twenty-one b Baker Street. All of this proves that the phenomenon of Sherlock Holmes isn’t ready to stop.
I chose to put this topic in the notion of mythes and heroes because which was only a library success is became in some years a phenomenon mondial order and it’s certainly a literary myth. More, Sherlock has an extraordinary mind, which made of him a person nonstandard and so it’s a heroe.
