- Prizes and Certifications
o Rainforest Alliance Certification
Fort the last two years, La Elisa has been awarded the Rainforest Alliance Certified Seal, bearing correspondence to its commitment to protect wildlife, lands, workers' rights and local communities
Rainforest Alliance Certified seal is a guarantee that coffee is grown on farms where forests are protected, rivers, soils and wildlife conserved; workers are treated with respect, paid decent wages, properly equipped and given access to education and medical care. Rainforest Alliance Certified farms have reduced environmental footprints, are good neighbors to human and wild communities and are often integral parts of regional conservation initiatives.
Under the auspices of the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), an international coalition of leading conservation groups, the Rainforest Alliance works with farmers to ensure compliance with the SAN standards for protecting wildlife, wild lands, workers' rights and local communities. Farms that meet these rigorous standards are awarded the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal
These Sustainable Agriculture Network standards go beyond organic in two critical sectors: wildlife conservation and worker welfare. Farmers certified by the Rainforest Alliance do not use agrochemicals prohibited by the United States Environmental Protection Agency or the European Union, nor do they use chemicals listed on the Pesticide Action Network's "Dirty Dozen" list. They are required to continually reduce their agrochemical use and to use biological alternatives whenever possible.
o UTZ Certification
From 2009, La Elisa is also UTZ Certified, which proves again our commitment to excellence.
UTZ CERTIFIED, formerly known as Utz Kapeh (good coffee in Maya language) is a world-wide certification program for responsible coffee production and sourcing. The UTZ CERTIFIED program assures that UTZ CERTIFIED coffee meets criteria for efficient farm and responsible production in a market-oriented way. UTZ CERTIFIED coffee purchases are fully traceable throughout the coffee chain. This enables buyers to know where their coffee comes from and how it was produced.
A web-based Track and Trace system follows the UTZ CERTIFIED coffee through the chain from grower to roaster. This gives buyers insight into where their coffee really comes from whilw, UTZ CERTIFIED's Chain of Custody criteria assure that UTZ CERTIFIED coffee is not mixed with non-certified coffee.
UTZ CERTIFIED also allows brands to meet the growing public expectations for environmental and social protection, while operating in competitive, price-sensitive markets. It provides an independent and credible way to communicate to its stakeholders about its purchasing of certified coffee.
The label takes social and environmental issues into account: UTZ-certified cooperatives, estate farms and producer groups comply with the UTZ CERTIFIED Code of Conduct. The UTZ CERITIFIED Code of Conduct is an internationally recognized set of economic, social and environmental criteria for responsible coffee production. The code covers the critical areas from record keeping and pesticide management, through worker health and safety, environmental and social issues and an efficient farm management. Particular emphasis has been placed on developing meaningful, implementable guidelines that work for both, large estates and smallholder groups. The code enables coffee producers to ensure that their product meets the requirements of the European retail market.
o Antójate de Antioquia
In May 2009 Café Uribia was awarded for Antojate de Antioquia, a project created in 2005 for the local government of Antioquia to give recognition and support to entrepreneurs who stand out for their innovation, creativity and competitiveness. Among 847 contestants from 8 different regions of Antioquia, all of them displaying excellent attributes, Café Uribia was awarded for bringing out the best in agro industrial, social and environmental practices while offering a top quality product.
o Coffee:
Rich and soft, this coffee is produced in La Elisa farm, in Valparaíso-Antioquia, at 1400m of altitude, with a tempered climate that oscillates between 20 to 25°C all year long. It grows within an excellent environment characterized for its ecological richness and is processed under the most strict standards in order to guarantee the best quality coffee produced on a responsible manner, respectful of the environment and the social welfare. For this reason Café Uribia deserves to be a Rain Forest and UTZ Certified.
Elegant, with a long taste, its combination of red fruits, spices, tobacco and leather fragrances makes of this coffee an aromatic masterpiece. It has an intense color and a creamy, fruity taste with the distinctive softness of Colombian coffee and vanilla tones resulting from its delicate process
Variedades Cultivadas:
Colombia produces exclusively Arabica Coffee. For its high altitudes, warm weather and natural richness, this country offers a perfect environment for the production of Arabica beans which grows better and shaded areas with well drained soil. Colombia's mountainous terrain, with its rich volcanic dirt, provides what the coffee tree needs especially when grown under the shade of rubber and banana trees. This results in a rich, full-bodied and tasty coffee that is used in most coffee houses and residences worldwide.
Arabica coffee offers different varieties. Among these varieties in la Elisa we can find:
o Variedad Colombia Tradicional:
Created for The Coffee Research Center –CENICAFE-, “Colombia Tradicional” is a composite type variety of coffee, resistant to leaf rust (H. vastatrix) and integrated by mixing seeds from advanced progenies resulting from the crossing of the Caturra variety and the Timor hybrid. For its physical characteristics (especially with regard to bean size) its good taste and its high resistance to pests and infestations (which guarantees the reduction of pesticides and therefore a cleaner production), this variety is regarded as one of the best in the coffee market.
o Variedad Colombia Castillo:
This is one of the most representatives varieties of Colombian Coffee. Created for The Coffee Research Center –CENICAFE-, “Colombia Castillo” is a compound variety, highly productive and environmentally adapted to the main coffee growing areas in the country. It is also resistant to the coffee rust.
o Maragogype:
First discovered in the Maragogype region of Brazil and brought to Colombia for Rafael Uribe Uribe, Maragogype trees produce the world's largest coffee beans (at least twice the size of the average bean), sometimes called "elephant'" beans. Maragogype beans are grown in a few regions and are a sought-after coffee for their smooth flavor with bittersweet tones as well as attractive appearance. For these cup characteristics Maragogype Coffee is highly appreciated in certain coffee markets, especially in Europe.
 Café Uribía:
Café Uribia is meant to meet the increasing demand for an authentic coffee, 100% traceable, with a unique taste and superior quality.
 Production
In La Elisa whole coffee grower families come together to produce the best coffee, within a sustainable agriculture system which contributes both to the preservation of the environment and to improving local quality of life.
By taking great care of every small detail through all the productive process, we are able to offer a top quality product, obtained from good social and environmental practices, based on international standards like The Sustainable Agriculture Network Standards and The UTZ Certified Code of Conduct, reason for which we are proud to be Rainforest and UTZ Certified.
