Abstract. We are looking for an optimal model of national monetary system in digital economy. Our analysis is based on a concept of money as a non-physical substance (ideal currency). Due to a higher level of abstraction of the definition of money this concept enables a unified approach to the description of all kinds of instruments used as money. From the point of view of the concept these instruments are just various forms of legal titles to ideal currency rather than money. It is shown that in digital economy optimal national monetary system will include a single sovereign money issuer and a single primary (non-debt) currency.
