Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is ... . I am writing to you to be considered for the EM ECW Scholarship at the University of Algarve, Portugal, in the Faculty of Languages.
I have liked studying foreign languages from an early age. For a long period of time I had lived in Romania. It was there where I mastered Romanian and, thereby, got acquainted with the Romanic group of languages. In St. Petersburg, where I moved later, I finished school with an in-depth study of the English language and passed the FCE exam. However, I have always been interested in the languages of the Romanic language group and on entering university I chose Portuguese as my major and took up courses of French and Italian. I am fond of studying these languages and, particularly, comparing them.
The ability to speak different languages is very important for me for several reasons. Firstly, it allows to enjoy communication with representatives of other cultures. Secondly, it helps to establish contacts between different countries and to learn more about the world and about foreigners’ mindset. I believe that the success of cross-cultural communication depends not only on the knowledge of languages but also on the interest which we show to other cultures.
My academic performance in languages proves my highest interest in this area. I have always liked studying and have always done my best. I have been active at university and participated in various scientific conferences for students. The process of studying is not less important for me than its result. That is why language studies is the thing I would like to connect my life with.
My master course research work is dedicated to peculiarities of Portuguese and Russian communicative behavior in expressive speaking acts. Although our countries seem to be close in terms of the general culture, they differ in many ways, and the communicative style of the two peoples is different. Things that are common in the Russian language may seem inappropriate and even rude in Portuguese. Portuguese people easily excuse grammar and lexical mistakes made by foreigners, explaining them by the lack of linguistic knowledge, but there are communicative errors that seem to them impolite and aforethought. These errors are caused by misunderstanding of national communicative style and may cause conflicts. So, I believe that it is not enough to learn a foreign language to be properly understood. To achieve our communication goals we have to take into consideration national mentality and style of communication. Collaboration between our countries is getting more active, and to make it more successful mutual understanding is needed.
Studying in Algarve would give me a lot of experience related to the topic of my research work and, moreover, it would help me to carry out a survey needed to compare common communicative models in the Russian and Portuguese languages. In addition to that, living in Portugal would give me a better understanding of culture and mentality of Portuguese people.
To sum up, I believe that the Master program in Linguistics at the University of Algarve perfectly suits my academic and personal interests and will benefit my career in this area.
