Floating nuclear power station
Floating nuclear power station – is a mobile low-power floating nuclear power plant, projected by Rosatom, Sevmash facility and other organizations.
According to the project, floating nuclear power station is a vessel with two nuclear reactors on-board, engineered by “OKBM Africantov”. Ship’s length is 144 meters, width is 30 meters. The ship is of 5000 tons displacement.
Floating station can be used for obtaining electricity and heat and also for desalination of sea water. It can produce about 100000 tones of desalinated water.
Historically, nuclear power was considered, first of all, as being useful for military purposes. However, as civil atomic technologies developed and huge amount of nuclear reactors appeared on naval vessels, submarines and ice-breakers, the profits of using mobile power sources, which could be used in distant and undeveloped areas, became obvious. Floating nuclear reactors were being used in the USA for supplying with energy Panama Canal and American research base in Antarctic.
