“One day, while taking a look at some vistas in Dad's stereopticon, it hit me that I was just this little girl, born in Texas, whose father was a sign painter and who had only just so many years to live. ”
In the decade of the sixties, a new lifestyle emerged in the United States that was committed to a series of social and political transformations. The common people took to the streets to protest; new artistic movements were created, at this time the world was prepared for a new change. In this context, from a remote village in Texas, Terrence Malick set his debut, a story difficult to recreate, despite the poetic resources typical of Malick, which stakes out the idea of the American dream.
Kit is a 25-year-old man, living by doing odd jobs, one day he meets Holly a fifteen years old girl of "high-class" that falls in love with. After the tragic death of Holly's father, their lives will never be the same again.
Running away through the badlands of the United States Kit will discover his most sinister side, hand in hand with Holly a cold and submissive girl, who loses her childhood and innocence without a precise notion of the consequences of their actions.
Several characteristic elements of Malick's cinema are reflected in the film; the interior and intertemporal protagonist's monologue using "J-cuts" and "Voice-over", nature as a symbolic element which serves as a medium between life and death, the planes, landscapes and photography of the America perfectly integrated as a common element throughout the film, besides, and not less important, the great soundtrack that always tends to drive the views to the reflections of the protagonists.
Badlands is a cult film with a lyrical and explosive style that makes us reflect on the true meaning of life.
